[The Great Wall of Los Angeles Speaker Series] “The Rogue Supreme Court” with Professor Paul Von Blum

Set against the backdrop of the new 1970s segment of the Great Wall of Los Angeles, Professor Von Blum will survey some of the most retrograde decisions of the United States Supreme Court from 2022 to the present.  

Von Blum explains how the six conservative justices making up the absolute majority have rendered ideological decisions that have very little or nothing to do with law or legal precedent and just about everything to do with their extreme right-wing political, social, and religious views. The presentation will show how the present Supreme Court is, in essence, the judicial branch of the Republican Party––the Trump MAGA Party.  Starting with the overturn of Roe. v Wade in 2022 and ending in the ruling curbing the ability of District Courts to curb unconstitutional presidential power grads this year, the talk will focus on some of the most dangerous decisions in recent years. 

Paul Von Blum is a Senior Lecturer in Communication and African American Studies at UCLA, where he has taught since 1980 after 11 years of faculty service at UC Berkeley.  He has received Distinguished Teaching Awards at both campuses.  He is the author of ten books and numerous articles about art, culture, history, and politics and writes regularly about contemporary affairs.  He has also been a political and civil rights activist his entire life.
