Series of 20 portraits by emancipated 18 year olds from Los Angeles County Foster Kids program. The portraits were published in book form and as prints.
Renowned muralist Judith F. Baca assisted by the SPARC TEAM made up of Debra Padilla, Martha Ramirez, Farhad Akmetov and Shinji Kitagawa recently conducted an innovative art workshop for 10 local foster care children at the Social And Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) in Venice, CA on Saturday February 19th, 2005, as part of the National Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Association’s national effort to offer foster children an opportunity to share their experiences as foster children and learn how to express themselves through art. Each participant received their own personal paint kit to take home after participating in the workshop entitled: De Donde Viene Y A Donde Vas? Where Did I Come From And Where Am I Going?
The artworks were digital and hand painted two foot by three foot portraits painted in acrylic paint. Gicles prints are available of the children’s work at SPARC. Youth were given an opportunity to produce exciting visual portraits in a new technique of the digital mural lab the combined digital and hand painted artwork the results were excellent and revealing self portraits.
The self-portraits of the young people, who range in age from 13 to 18, will be featured at a gallery reception and art auction at Tamayo Restaurant in Los Angeles on April 28th, 2005. Money raised at the auction will benefit the local foster care artists, and the artworks will be displayed throughout Los Angeles as part of the May Foster Care Awareness Campaign.
The National CASA Association works with state and local volunteer programs to promote and support quality volunteer advocacy to help assure each child a safe, permanent nurturing home.
