Dia de Los Muertos at SPARC

October 27, 2019

On October 27th, 2019 SPARC held its 17th annual Día de los Muertos celebration and ritual. SPARC partners with Professor Martha Ramirez-Oropeza and over 100 UCLA students every year to honor the memories of those who have passed on. Students built intricate altars that represented Día de los Muertos traditions of various regions of Mexico and Central America.
This year we were joined by the LA Rams Mariachi Band, Pio Pico Middle School and a band composed of indigenous artists who blend the music of today with the sounds of our ancestors.

Later that night, Professor Ramirez-Oropeza led an invocation ritual in Nahuatl, Spanish and English to call the spirits to join the celebration. Be a part of our ceremony by bringing a photograph of a loved one for our community altar. The evening will also include live performances and delicious Oaxacan food for sale. ⠀
